Nothing can prepare you for children. Sure you can read parenting books, ask your parents questions and of course you’ll get advice from other parents, but until you become a parent, you can’t know or begin to understand.
Being Ready
I knew I wanted kids someday, but wasn’t in a rush to have them. My husband on the other hand would have been ready to have them right after we got married. So even though it was a few years after we’d been married, I wasn’t quite ready when that digital pregnancy test said “pregnant”. I had 9 months to get ready, but in all honesty it could’ve been 3 months or 3 years, I wouldn’t have been ready. As her due date crept closer each week everyone would ask, "Are you ready?" My response every time was, "I'm ready to be done being pregnant, I don't know if I'm ready to be a mom."
Claire decided to help me out with the pregnancy part and came 2 weeks early. Holding her for the first time, although it was so wonderful to finally meet this tiny human, was a big blurry crazy mess. Doctors are cleaning you up, nurses are checking out baby, family comes to visit, blurry crazy mess. The first night in the hospital my husband had gone home to get some rest and it was just me and my new baby girl, that’s when I was ready. I was completely hooked. Holding a baby didn’t even interest me before, now I never wanted to put her down. Now as the weeks creep by everyone asks “A baby sure changes your life, huh?" My response every time is, “In the absolute best way.”
